I bought my first Pioneer (Geneon) product aid when Pioneer laser discs were nearly the only device to rep anime translated into English. Tenchi Muyo was the anime that had me bent. I was saddened but not surprised when Geneon left the US market, because none of its later offerings, including later Tenchi series, were as well-behaved a Pioneer’s first offering. I was very ecstatic to glance Kamichu as one of Geneon’s final offerings, and this turned out to be the best anime series the company ever offered. No fights. No giant robots. No sex. No gore. No whacky situation aliens. Impartial three Japanese junior high girls who try to cope when one of them announces that she, inexplicably, has become a god in the Shinto sense. This is a very sweet chronicle, so sweet it may induce cavities or a diabetic coma. The animation is among the best cell animation I have ever seen, with no shortcuts taken, and no mismatching computer animation jammed in here and there. The deny acting, on both the Japanese and English tracks are among the best i have ever heard, and is age appropriate to the characters. If you want family-friendly anime, or a anime series to introduce your lady friend to your anime hobby, this may be the series for you. If all of Pioneer - Geneon’s offerings had been the quality of Kamichu, the company might not have found it vital to leave the U.S. Market. Short, Sweet, and among the very best!

If you are a fan of Miyazaki’s work you will worship this anime. I found it hard to maintain it wasn’t a work of Miyazaki. It is beautifuly exciting, with charming characters and music.

A man and his dog are walking along Henderson Creek in the high Yukon country. It is winter, and winter in the Yukon can be unforgiving to a chechaquo, a newcomer to the land. It’s the man’s first winter and he is walking on a day he should not. The dog knows this, but the man is a newcomer. The temperature is colder than sixty-five degrees below zero. Jack London’s `To Produce a Fire’ is a classic chronicle of man against nature, London’s harsh Yukon nature that was ruled by the law of club and fang. First published as a juvenile record in the magazine Youth’s Companion in 1902, it was changed a bit for an adult audience and published in its final create in the Century Magazine in 1908. A limited later it was anthologized in a slim volume of London short stories entitled `Lost Face’ in 1910.

TO Execute A FIRE is a 56-minute episode from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s 1981 mini-series `Jack London’s Tales of the Klondike.’ Directed by David Cobham, narrated by Orson Welles and starring Ian Hogg as the man, it is a faithful adaptation. Which, in this case, is a mixed blessing. London wrote from inside his characters, and what happened - the action - almost always shared equal billing with the character’s reaction to that action. I mean, his masterpiece, The Call of the Wild, is written from a dog’s point-of-view! The challenge presented by works like Call of the Wild and To Accomplish a Fire is to bring that inner hiss to the surface. This program met the challenge, with middling success, by having Welles read pertinent sentences from the anecdote over the action.

Catch the narration and you have an hour’s worth of a man walking across the snow. It doesn’t search for as icy as I’ve pictured it, although whoever did the make-up frosted up the man’s beard upright nicely. The man and dog acquire along too well, too. London’s Man ruled by the club, his Dog challenged that rule with the fang, and neither party ever seemed particularly fond of the other. There are scenes in TO Create A FIRE where the dog seems downright frisky and prankish. Nowhere in the program is this observation from London’s fable on show - “On the other hand, there was no interested intimacy between the dog and the man. The one was the toil-slave of the other, and the only caresses it had ever received were the caresses of the whip-lash and of harsh and menacing throat-sounds that threatened the whip-lash. ” I never plan I’d ever have occasion to offer this observation, but I deem the husky Pepper was miscast. This program needed a surly dog, and they got a Disney-cute one instead. I haltingly recommend TO Invent A FIRE. It could have been grand worse. Do not under any circumstance, though, survey this before reading the myth. London’s account in its entirety is readily available on the internet, and your first exposure to a myth usually sets it in your mind. If you study this before reading the current you’re likely to wonder what all the fuss is about.

I’ve developed a viewing guide for this film which combines the narration and a “few” excerpts from London’s short legend — thus I’ve spent a broad deal of time studying the film and London’s modern memoir.

What bothers me immensely about “many” Amazon reviewers of films are the “observations” or “criticisms” that the “film versions” don’t measure up to recent literary works.

Why should they?

These are “film adaptation” and the filmmaker seldom can “match” the creative essence of the unique literary work.

Quite often the film adaptations are “far valid” to fresh literary works in creating important and lasting literary experiences.

In the past fifty years or so, “electronic literary experiences” have become the necessary medium for vicarious literary experiences.

In this case — the film adaptation of London’s “To Produce A Fire” — the filmmaker captures the “essence” of the narrative. The film version is a classic — especially well done considering that the film was produced and released 39 years ago, and was never intended to be a major theatrical release.

For you “literature teachers” try a controlled experiment with two groups - spend “only” the film with the one group; while using “only” London’s chronicle with the other group. Be obvious the two groups are comparable — then compare and difference. I dare you.

Also, try such a “controlled” experience with recalcitrant / reluctant students in “both” groups. I dare you.

If no one ultimately reads London’s anecdote it will depart, even from the internet.

Cormac McCarthy’s unusual NO COUNTRY FOR Faded MEN has been successfully transformed into a film in the skilled hands of Ethan and Joel Coen. The legend is intact, the characters are given the dialog so uniquely McCarthy’s invention, and the dread of the message of the book - that we have approach to a point in time when crime, especially random abolish, surrounds our lives - is, if anything, even more pungent than on the pages of the book. It is an astounding, and a highly disturbing movie, and while this viewer is one of the few who does not absorb it deserved the Oscar for Best Narrate, there is microscopic doubt that it is a sparkling allotment of cinema.

The narrative is fairly simple: on the raw plains of Texas a slaughter of men and dogs engaged in a drug deal is discovered by a simple guy Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) . Moss observes the mayhem, sees the drugs, finds the 2 million dollar payoff money, takes the money, and embarks on an elope, leaving his wife Carla (Kelly Macdonald) to run the pursuit of a wrathful killer Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who in turn is being pursued by the local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a hired hitman (Woody Harrelson) . The satchel of money contains a tracking design and Chigurh has the instrument principal to follow the high-tail the way leads. The remainder of the film is the pursuit both in Texas and in Mexico, accompanied by countless brutal murders of all sorts by the crazed Chigurh, until a surprise ending.

But the toughest portion of this violent film is more in the discussion of shared philosophies between the sheriff and his conventional cronies: they consider on the unlit region of universal crime that is so different and more malevolent than in the ‘old days’. The conversations, in the righteous dialog of these passe men, bring our attention to some realities we would rather not confront, and those realities are even more disturbing than the repeated images of bloated bodies and senseless murders that contain the cover. Jones, Brolin, and Bardem are indeed marvelous in their roles, but the miniature cameos of the townsfolk of Texas are diminutive gems of acting and direction. This is a difficult film to notice because of all of the violence, but the message is one we must tag. We may be allowing the creation of ‘no country for any men’. Grady Harp, March 08

Violent, sunless, involving and an off-humor tone that is like no other. `NO COUNTRY FOR Frail MEN’ is indeed a Coen Brothers masterpiece!

The film is possibly the most ambitious film from the Award winning filmmakers, Joel and Ethan Coen (”Fargo”, “The Gargantuan Lebowski”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou? “, “Raising Arizona”) based on the 2005 current by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. “NO COUNTRY FOR Feeble MEN” was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four which include “Best Achievement in Directing”, “Best Motion Relate of the Year”, “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role” and “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published”.

“NO COUNTRY FOR Extinct MEN” makes its re-appearance on Blu-ray with a recent audio track, five hours of bonus footage and a digital copy.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“NO COUNTRY FOR Former MEN” is featured in 1080p High Definition with an aspect ratio of (2:35:1) . One thing you will scrutinize is how the colors of the rugged outdoors really pops. The earth tones and its vibrancy during the day, to the shaded shadowy and blues during the night. I saw no major artifacting or high grain during the vulgar light conditions.

Also, when you look the characters in High Definition, you spy the wrinkles, the pores…very detailed record quality. Even the people who were shot and killed, profitable amount of detail in the bullet wounds and showcasing how distinguished detail the crew went into making determined the these wounds peek realistic. There is no denying that the recount quality for “NO COUNTRY FOR Stale MEN” is incredible and legal up there with the top tier titles. The backgrounds of Southwest Texas, the multiple colors that showcase the vibrancy of the film, to the murky scenes that note no problems and of course the overall details that you objective never contemplate of, are seen quite clearly on this title.

Director of Photography Roger Deakins (”A Lovely Mind”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou? “, “The Gigantic Lebowski”, “Fargo”, “The Shawshank Redemption”) continues to be one of the top DP’s in the industry and was definitey deserving of an Academy Award nomination for his awesome cinematography.

As for audio, this is where “NO COUNTRY FOR Aged MEN” takes a ample step up to perfection. Buena Vista Home Entertainment made definite the current soundtrack for this second version release utilized an English 5.1 DTS-HD (48 kHz/24-bit) track over the PCM version. And boy, does it manufacture a inequity. If you view the gun shots as the bullets stammer, the rifle shots, a dogs being shot, vehicles engaging, those action scenes alone sound clearer and punchier than the previous PCM track. The dialogue is definite and there is objective a sense of more clearer sound than the PCM track. Quite frankly, this is the best audio treatment of the film and the last one was comely but for this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition, audio is kindly!

And again, the film was definitely deserving for its Academy Award nominations for its achievements in Sound and Sound Editing. The crew did a incredible job!

JUDGMENT CALL:

“NO COUNTRY FOR Stale MEN” is definitely not a film for the used hearted. The film has its many layers but I believe that Javier Bardem’s salubrious portrayal of the psychopath Anton Chigurh is going to ruffle some feathers because of his overall recognize, his demeanor and his eyes of the thrill of a waste, you can’t relieve but consider how hooked this character is and for definite characters, who encounter Chigurh, you are at the edge of your seat as he wants to choose the fate if they live or die. It’s curved and his means of killing and the barrage of violence is not going to effect the squeamish any happier.

This is possible the Coen Brothers darkest film. Granted “Fargo” was a dusky film but “NO COUNTRY FOR Customary MEN” is well-written, well-acted, well-filmed…it’s the Coen Brothers masterpiece extravaganza. Murky humor, violence galore but a well-told area and characters that you want to contemplate.

For me, the violence was excessive but it was needed. It was very necessary to reveal Chigurh as this psychopath and the level of detail that went into showing those bloody scenes was well done by the crew.

As the Coen Brothers and Javier Bardem did a improbable job, you also have to give the thumbs up to the other talent.

Josh Brolin being denied an Academy Award nomination was a bit of a shock. Where many people have not been fortunate to acquire away from Chigurh, the character of Llewelyn Moss was a constant challenge but you actually felt yourself rooting for Moss for a itsy-bitsy while.

Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell was portrayed very well. A World War II Vet and proud Sheriff who is now having to deal with drug deals and mafia style killings, he’s not prepared to rob on these type of people. This is not the same country he lived in before, it’s become unsafe and hence the title “NO COUNTRY FOR Old-fashioned MEN”.

I will have to say the shiny star was Kelly MacDonald as Carla Jean. At first, you mediate that the woman is the token stout at the beginning of the film but her final scenes perhaps is a scene that has left many people wondering what happened to her character. It’s because her character was able to do something that many of the other characters have not and thus, comes away being someone special. And I also have to say that I was shy to gather out that Macdonald was Scottish and had this thick accent and to hear hear playing a woman with this Southern boom was fantastic. Well done!

Many people who purchased the first Blu-ray disc may be asking themselves, is this second collector’s edition worth it? Absolutely yes! The current DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is fair improbable. Combine that with already the perfect video, video and audio are unbiased perfect. The special features also gets a 5 with five hours of interview footage and in depth knowledge slack what the Coen Brothers wanted to finish in the film, to hear the talents (with the exception of Tommy Lee Jones) really explain their passion towards this film and fair very genuine insight of the making of the film.

So, as mighty as I disapprove re-releases especially if they are not long after the previous was released, in this case, I have to say that the release of “NO COUNTRY FOR Primitive MEN” was warranted. For such an fantastic and glorious film, it deserved special treatment and now it does.

“NO COUNTRY FOR Aged MEN - 2-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION” receives an A+ and is highly recommended!

I caught this film in a theater in Ft. Lauderdale and I was bowled over. AT last, it’s been released on DVD and it’s worth the wait. Seeing it again, I laughed even more than the first time - the characters collect under your skin with their bizarre antics and the direction is truly clever, juxtaposing a running plotline about a white-trash funeral and the surreal characters who near together as a result. Special kudos to Bonnie Bedelia, who is shrill but ultimately a exact character. And Leslie Jordan as a drag-queen in a mental institution channeling Tammy Wynette is flat out HYSTERICAL.

The DVD has some standard extras - deleted scenes, extra songs, a fresh opening, and commentary from stars and the director. I promise you - this is a movie you will part with your friends and laugh laugh laugh! Distinct, it can be corny and superficial at times, but lemme drawl ya…the characters are never less than 3-dimensionsal.

This is a titillating, witty, humane movie with a terrific ensemble cast that deserves attention. An intertwined collection of minute town stories about faith, esteem and redemption, “Sordid Lives” has more laughs in its first 15 minutes than most comedies bask in in two hours. The performances are uniformly file, including Bonnie Bedelia, Delta Burke, Olivia Newton-John (a sweet and excellent surprise), Leslie Jordan, and Beau Bridges. There are moments of sheer bliss as a town prepares to bury one of its occupy against a backdrop of angst, humor and precise drama. Even the hysterical parts are handled with stout sentiment and care. The audience I saw the movie with was cackling with laughter! A terrific film!

“Sordid Lives” received only a dinky release in theaters in the Los Angeles spot, so it has not been seen by nearly as many people as it should.

Writer-director Del Shores balances comely sensitivity with gut-busting laughs in this memoir of a Texas family beset by death and homosexuality, not necessarily in that order.

The central figure, Ty, is a ecstatic TV soap opera actor who is “out” to his friends and associates, but detached closeted to his Texas family, who have gone so far as to institutionalize another family member (”Brother Boy”) simply because of his penchant for dressing up like Tammy Wynette.

The two chronicle elements are brought together over the funeral of the family matriarch, who passed away in the midst of a motel room tryst with a married man. (She tripped over one of his prosthetic legs and hit her head on a bathroom sink) .

After “Arlong’s reign of scare” the crew of Monkey D. Luffy is at it again in this Fourth Voyage. What can I say about this awesome note? It unbiased keeps getting better, and better. This DVD box status is the same as the others. 14 Episodes of pure fun, and adventure. Marathon mode and some extra’s are included, but not mighty to talk about. This box site has episodes 40-53 as described by Amazon, which leads to the only complaint anyone has about this reveal. The exhibit is composed going strong in Japan, with over 400 episodes. It’s going to lift a while for the US to glean up, so one would only hope that Funimation will launch to release bigger box sets. The stutter acting is pleasurable. At first Luffy’s inform takes you by surprise, but you bag consume to it and it really does fit his creature. If you a parent of a young child, than I would suggest that you quit distinct of this release and bewitch the 4Kids version, the 4Kids version is heavily edited but is more satisfactory for younger children (for instance, Sanji cigarettes are turned into lollypops) . This version is uncut, and contains violence, and cursing. Overall, this box position has nothing novel, but episodes. It’s the same packaging as the others, and continues a sizable anecdote. It’s worth the money.

It starts as they effect off Arlong and ends as they leave Loguetown for the big line. As with the last 3 sets its completely uncut, although I notion this plot had quite a bit more cussing than the previous 3. Looking forward up Season 2 voyage 1!

This one of my accepted movies. Years ago I rented a VHS of it and made a dupe at home. The quality was lousy but I liked it and played it often, but I learned my lession about making unauthorized copies. My daughter’s puppy urinated all over the tape. This movie is so reliable it even survived that.

This is classic noir, with Phillip Marlowe. The position is about stolen jade, hidden identities, blackmail, appreciate, treachery and abolish. The anecdote is complicated, the casting is tremendous, the photography and voice-over narration carry things along. It has style. The ending is satisfying. And the dialogue is some of the best ever written.

Powell broke through into serious roles with this film. Even in all the singing roles he had up to this movie he exuded cocky confidence, and that aspect of his personality is perfect here. As an aside, if you delight in his singing movies, and I do, search for how he can smile naturally while singing; that’s hard.

Claire Trevor, it seems to me, almost always played bruised roses (Stagecoach, Key Largo) or rotting orchids. You cared about her because she was one of life’s losers, or you wanted to go to bed with her even lustrous you might not wake up in the morning. The scene when we (and Marlowe) first meet her is honest as first-rate as the scene when MacMurray first meets Stanwyck in Double Indemnity.

Mike Mazurki as Moose Malloy is stout, probably the best role he ever had. He was no actor, but he is effective and sympathetic as a dinky pyscho who genuinely is in love; he’s starring in his possess version of Romeo and Velma.

One of the key ingredients in making this movie work is the dialogue. Quantities of it must have been lifted verbatim from Farewell, My Delicate. When Moose talks about Velma being “cute as lace panties” the imagery is sparkling. Raymond Chandler, in my concept, is the best author of private gawk mysteries yet. If you haven’t read him, dive in. Ross Macdonald and Hammett arrive cessation, but it’s no three-way tie.

View the movie. Read the book.

The DVD transfer is first rate. There’s a commentary by a fellow named Alain Silver which is adequate, and not significant to enjoying the film.

Dick Powell makes a ravishing Philip Marlowe in this beautiful film noir. The film is based on Raymond Chandler’s “Farewell, My Aesthetic,” which marks the second appearance of Marlowe in print. The book was actually adapted once before for an entry in the Falcon series (”The Falcon Takes Over”), which featured George Sanders. That film, however, simply adapted the station of “Farewell, My Ravishing” for the Falcon series; hence, the character is named Cheerful Lawrence, not Philip Marlowe. So in enact, “Kill, My Sweet” is the first hide appearance of Philip Marlowe. In addition, “The Falcon Takes Over” is a decent but lightweight thriller - not the noir classic of “Slay, My Sweet.”

The region is typically convoluted for a film noir written by Chandler. Marlowe, a somewhat down-on-his-luck private detective, is approached by Moose Malloy, a giant of a man who has fair been released from the pokey and is searching for his ex-girlfriend. He reluctantly accepts the case. However, before he can earn headway, Marlowe gets a second client, the effete Lindsay Marriott who wants Marlowe to accompany him on a slow night pay-off. These two cases expeditiously become enmeshed and lead to numerous complications and murders.

“Slay, My Sweet” is expedient film noir in every intention. Director Edward Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny, Crossfire) was one of the best noir film makers of all time, and he uses the conventions of the genre (shadows and novel lighting, hard-boiled dialogue) with attractive subtlety. The cast is also fabulous - lead by Powell as Marlowe. Arguably, Humphrey Bogart was a more forceful Marlowe two years later in “The Great Sleep.” However, Powell is convincing as the straight-shooting but somewhat desperate detective. Furthermore, he’s joined by femme fatale Claire Trevor, who is always terrific in this type of hard-bitten role. Screenwriter John Paxton adapted Chandler’s unusual - managing to set some of the best bits, such as Marlowe’s encounter with Mrs. Florian (”She was a charming middle-aged lady with a face like a bucket of mud”) . All of the elements really approach together for one of the finest noirs ever made, and this DVD transfer is solid.

DVD extras: The modern theatrical trailer and an informational, but somewhat plain commentary by Alain Silver, who is a film producer and has written several books on film noir.

Adult Swim have realy outdone themselves this time. Who would have notion that a cartoon about a post-apocalyptic death metal band ruling the world would be this generous? Whether they’re unleashing swarms of murderous kitties on an unsuspecting populous, summoning giant trolls to ravage the countryside, trying their hand at stand-up comedy (death metal style), or destroying hippies with the combined darkness of thrash and the blues Dethklok always finds a draw to retain the mayhem coming.

Featuring the world’s fastest guitarist, a bassist who can pull off a bad solo playing with his johnson, an alcoholic drummer who worn to front a terrible 80’s metal band, an amusingly naive childish rhythm guitarist, and a singer who talks in his growling metal train all the time and is obsessed with all things brutal, the demonstrate is never short of hilarious characters to abuse and the laughs unprejudiced do not end. And I haven’t even mentioned Dr. Rockso, the rock ‘n roll clown who uses his high Axl Rose-ish whine to teach his earn phrase, “I DO COCAINE!!!” at anyone who will listen.

The music is fantastically metal with plenty of double-bass drums, shredding guitar, and nearly incoherent ranting (the subtitles attend lots) that will gain you bang your head and laugh at the same time. The episodes are short, to the point, and packed with satire, heavy metal references (a swiftly food location named Dimmu Burger, anyone? ), and shear insanity. My personal common episode involves bassist William Murderface looking for religion after a near-death experience. The band takes him to a lame christian rock point to where several concert-goers and band members wind up dying horrid deaths after a Dethklok member tries to join the fun by starting a mosh pit. Later, they give devil worshipping a try in what has to be one of the funniest enthralling scenes (and possibly most factual to life) I’ve ever watched. Best satanic quote ever: “Catch up after yourselves; this is a Church of Satan, not a wastepaper basket.”

If you don’t glance a special features menu when you fire up your DVD’s, don’t freak out. The bizarre assortment of features are hidden within the menu and can be found by racy the cursor to highlight different parts of the logo or band members’ faces. There is a tour of Dethklok’s compound, Mordhaus, a series of silly band interviews, a slightly extended Murderface bass solo, a montage featuring the series’ more violent moments, and even a miniature porn. Then there’s the 20 minutes of frontman Nathan Explosion reading Shakespeare; if you can sit through that, you are a bigger fan than I. My only complaint is that -while the special features are freeballing it- the exhibit itself remains censored. Distinct, the frosty guitar noises beat the hell out of the bleeps other shows exhaust, but they should be optional. Unexcited it’s a minor complaint about an awesome position.

So if you’re a metalhead with a sense of humor or are looking for some truly zigzag, violent, and laugh-out-loud droll engrossing entertainment to NOT fragment with your children then “Metalocalypse” is as great as it gets. And with each episode clocking in at a shrimp over 10 minutes, it’s a improbable map to earn some snappy laughs and hear some headbanging valid music on the speed. “Now go forth and DIIIIIEEEE!!!!”

Metalocalypse… I shouldn’t really have to say more but I’d treasure to anyway. I was channel surfing one night and came across the best exhibit Adult Swim has to offer, and changed the channel. It was halfway through the episode and I didn’t know what was going on. Later, a buddy of mine told me to eye it. We watched Dethwater and I was curved. This present is large for any fan Metal fan or not. Now I have introduced to a lot of my friends. Even ones that can’t stand heavy metal, and they can attest to the greatness of this reveal. Five friggin stars. Anyone, who’s already a fan of Adult Swim shows, should have no spot getting expeditiously attached to this exhibit. Squizgar Squigelf Taller than a Tree, Toki Wartooth not a bumble be, William Murderface, Murderface, Murderface, Pickles the Drummer doodlie doo, ding dong doodlie doo… Nathan Explosion.
